The City and Borough of Sitka’s Electric Department will temporarily close Katlian Street in the 200-500 block between A&B Harbor and Kirkman Way on Thursday, March 12 beginning at 5:00 p.m. while crews replace a failed revenue meter on a transformer pole near 329 Katlian Street (North Pacific Seafoods). The work is expected to take approximately four to six hours to complete.
Crews will be working in a narrow area with heavy equipment. The work is planned in a way that avoids electrical outages to nearby customers. Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes while work is underway.

Airport Checked Baggage Screening Notice

As part of the Airport Terminal Improvement Project, the Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport will be hand screening checked luggage from Monday, February 23 through Wednesday, March 18, 2026. During this time, travelers can expect extended screening times for checked baggage.
Passengers are strongly encouraged to arrive early and allow additional time for luggage screening prior to their scheduled departure. Baggage Check-in times:

Stay and Play Program at the Library

Babies, toddlers, and siblings up to five-years-old are invited to the Stay and Play Program at Sitka Public Library. Programs during the fall will run the following Tuesdays from 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at the Sitka Public Library's multipurpose room: February 24, March 3, March 10, and March 17. This is a self-guided program. Families will have access to a variety of tinkering toys and activities. Materials will be available to use until 4:25 p.m. to allow for clean-up time.

Winter Preschool Storytime Schedule at Sitka Public Library

During the winter months, Sitka Public Library’s Preschool Storytime will be offered the following Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. at the library’s multipurpose room: February 26, March 5, March 12, and March 19. The program includes readings, rhymes, songs, and a craft project. Everybody is welcome.

Work Float Closure for Repairs

Beginning Tuesday, December 2, the Fisherman’s Work Float at 1494 Seward Avenue on Japonski Island will be closed to the public while crews complete major repairs to extend the service life of the structure and improve safety.
