SPD and FOSAS Collaborate on Sitka Animal Shelter Operations
12/19/2024

The Sitka Police Department (SPD) and Friends of the Sitka Animal Shelter (FOSAS) are continuing to collaborate on a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that outlines their respective roles and responsibilities for the Sitka Animal Shelter. The team has reached agreement on several items, including the development of intake procedures for animals, exploring software solutions for simplifying volunteer scheduling, and establishing updated standards for volunteer training and conduct.

During their joint meeting on December 17, they focused on more challenging topics regarding animal disposition, including adoption and euthanasia, as well as standards of care. These discussions are ongoing, and the group plans to reconvene in early January with the goal of finalizing the MOU shortly thereafter if consensus can be reached. They aim to proceed into a long-term planning process, which will be facilitated by Assembly Member Thor Christianson

The Sitka Animal Shelter is currently open and able to accept animals in need of temporary shelter. Residents who require these services should contact police dispatch at 907.747.3245. For individuals looking to rehome their pets in non-emergency circumstances, please reach out to FOSAS directly at sitkaanimalfriends@gmail.com or https://www.facebook.com/sitkaanimalfriends for assistance.

SPD would like to express their gratitude to the community for the generous donations of food and other supplies that are currently at the shelter. In November, FOSAS organized a volunteer cleaning day to sort and organize donations, as well as to deep clean the shelter. The shelter is currently well stocked with food, linens, and most other pet supplies. When further donation needs arise, SPD will communicate that information to the public.
