Senior Citizens Reminded of Sales Tax Procedures

Sitka General Code 4.09.100(y) allows any retired person, sixty-five years of age or older, who is a resident of the State of Alaska to apply for a senior citizen sales tax exemption card. The City and Borough continues to receive calls on abuse in this area of sales tax exemption. Businesses have been reminded to request the senior display the card at time of the sale in which the tax exemption is requested per SGC 4.09.100(y)(D).

If a senior is unable to be present at the time of sale, the senior must provide his/her proxy with the card or a photocopy of the card and a letter of authorization granting the proxy permission to use the senior’s card for the purpose of purchasing for the senior’s behalf.

If the senior has lost their card or needs to obtain a card for their spouse, replacement and new issued cards are available on the second floor of the City Office Building in the Sales Tax offices.  If you have any questions, you may also contact the Sales Tax staff at 747-1840 or 747-1853.
