Plastic Bags

Plastic supermarket bags can be recycled at all three Sitka supermarkets.

Look for the white bins at the front of each store.

Recycle those bags that come from the supermarket in the first place. There should be no soiled bags.

The grocers will return the bags to Seattle, where they are recycled into new bags and other products.

Batteries

Batteries are filled with many toxic chemicals and dangerous heavy metals and should be kept out of the regular waste stream.

Household batteries (including rechargeable battery packs from portable hair driers, tools etc.) can be taken to the following businesses for safe and appropriate disposal.

  • White’s Pharmacy
  • Harry Race
  • Lakeside Grocery
  • Sea Mart
  • Market Center
  • Southeast Camera
  • True Value
  • Spenard Bulders Supply
  • City Offices

Car Batteries can be recycled and reused. Bring your car or boat battery to Napa Auto Parts, next to Spenard Builders Supply on Smith St.

Using Rechargeable Batteries can save you a lot of money in the long term, Consider buying a battery charger and rechargeable batteries.

Used Oil

Used Oil is the oil that has been drained from engines during oil changes and is not contaminated with other chemicals. This oil can be burned as fuel in a special furnace at Sheldon Jackson College.

Used Oil should be taken to any of the municipal harbors where you will find special receptacles and instructions.
