Household Hazardous Materials

Household Hazardous Waste includes paints, solvents, pesticides and other chemicals. These should not be placed in your trash!

Watch for the semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, where all your chemical items may be safely disposed of. Eligible items include solvents, oil paints, antifreeze, cleaners, poisons, acids, batteries, caustics, furniture stripper, herbicides, pesticides, printing and photographic chemicals.

However, the following items will not be accepted: explosives, blasting caps and gun powder, reactives such as sodium metal and radioactive wastes.

All households, certain small businesses and government agences are eligible to participate in the event.

If you need more information about Household Hazardous Wastes, call the city Public Works Department at 747-1804.

Commercial producers of hazardous waste should also contact the city Public Works Department or the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING

Check out the community calendar for electronics recycling day. The Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) and the City of Sitka collaborate to sponsor recycling days during which time they would accept outdated electronics equipment such as televisions, computer monitors, computers/laptops, keyboards, mice, modems, external drives, small scanners, printers, copy machines, cables, other computer peripherals, VCRs, DVD players, stereos, radios, etc. The cost for recycling ranges from $8 to $10 per TV or computer monitor, and 25 cents a pound for everything else.
