Emergency Procedures

If a customer is having a problem with the following, the best course of action to take is listed below.

Shorting, arcing, buzzing noise, smell smoke or fire is burning:

  • Dial 911 or call Fire Department at 747-3233 and advise them of the problem.  Give your  name, address and phone number. If there is a smell of smoke or if there is fire, leave the  residence after calling.
  • If there is no smoke or fire, call the Electric Department (747-4000; after hours 747-6634) next and advise them of problem. Again, give them your name, address and phone number.  The line crew will be dispatched to assess the problem.

Low voltage, a portion of lights are out, or dim lights:

  • Call the Electric Department and advise them of the problem.  Give your name, address

           and phone number.  The line crew will be dispatched to assess the problem.

No power:

  • Check circuit breaker.  Note if anyone in your area is also without power or if it just seems to be in the specific  residence.
  • If the circuit breaker is all right, call the Electric Department and advise them of the

           problem.  If you have received a disconnect notice, please let the Electric Department

           know. Give your name, address and phone number.  If the problem is localized to one

           residence, the line crew will be dispatched to assess the problem.  If the problem

           seems to be in a particular area, both the generation department and the line crew

           will work on  restoring power to the affected area.

Damage caused to physical equipment (poles, transformer vaults, meter bases) by a vehicle(s) or person(s):

  • Call Police Department and advise them of the problem.  Give your name, address and

           phone number. 

  • Call the Electric Department and advise them of the problem.  Give your name, address

           and phone number.  The line crew will be dispatched to assess the problem; if an

           outage  occurs as a result of an accident, the generation department will also work  

           on  restoring  power to the affected area.

Street light out:

  • If there is a street light that is intermittently on and off, or if it is off completely, call the

           Electric Department and advise them of the problem.  Give your name, address, phone

           number and the exact location of the street light.  The line crew will fix the light during

          the course of  their normally scheduled work.

Bill is abnormally high:

  • Call the Customer Service counter (747-1881) and advise them of the problem.  Give your  name, address and phone number.  The Customer Service counter will issue a work order for a meter technician to re-read the meter.
